USS Cunningham (fiction by James Cobb)

I was recently told about a series of four fiction books by James Cobb. It's a series about Amanda Garrett who commands the first "stealth destroyer". The destroyer is named the USS Cunningham, after Duke Cunningham. His wings are mounted in a frame on the ship's bridge.

The series was published in 1997-2002.

Choosers of the Slane (1997)
Sea Strike (1999)
Sea Fighter (2000)
Target Lock (2002)

Read the books. Not all that impressed with them.

If they're still publishing this series, I'm sure they'll have to rename the ship to something else. Perhaps, the USS Willie Driscoll?

If the author doesn't want to rename the ship then they should add a photo of his mug shot in the honor locker.

Now you know in the real world, except for President Reagan and the senior President Bush, Navy ships are not named for living persons. They want to see the whole history. . .

I agree. I personally prefer that the Navy went back to the old tradition of naming ships:
Famous Navy Ships
Famous Navy Battles
Famous Dead Not Guilty Naval Heroes
States, Cities and Fish.

Screw the pols.

It is true Fish don't vote, but I find that naming ships after pols smacks of narcissism, self promotion and brownnosing.

Dan - you are absolutely on point. This modern naming system is crap and getting on the leg.
