 Pension??

I've been trying to find out if Cunningham will be receiving a full pension from us taxpayers for the time he spent padding his pockets. And I'm wondering also if the military is particularly proud to contribute to his retirement.

Politicians wonder why voter apathy is rampant. Cunningham took $2.4 million in bribes and was fined $1.8 million plus 8 years ... he gets to keep $600,000 !??! Hell, at $70,000 a year jail pays pretty well, maybe the rest of congress should join him.

Yes, Duke Cunningham not only gets a full Congressional Pension, but also a pension for his 20 years of military service.

Don't worry—he doesn't get to keep anything. The $1.8 million was the cash on hand. Add on to that the yet-to-be-auctioned antique furniture.

Additionally, Cunningham has a $1.8 million tax liability on the undeclared bribes. He must pay $1500/month in prison and $1000/month after release, so his pensions are reduced somewhat.

The "Duke Cunningham Act", if enacted, will prohibit members of Congress in the future from receiveing pensions if convicted of bribes, but due to the ex-post facto clause in the Constitution, it can't be applied retroactively. I'll be happy if the act passes at all once the attention dies down. I would write my congressman, but he's in prison now.

And as long as our Constitution, thankfully, forbids "EX Post Facto Laws" he will keep both pensions.

Obeying the Constitution even when it's unpopular. How touching!

Being a nation of laws, rather than men, is what seperates us from the lawless countries like Iraq and the lower forms of states and countries.

Phil, obeying the Constitution may be unpopular with you, but not with the responsible citizens in our Republic.
